Customer Reviews:
This book is right on! We rented a 4wheel drive and found every out of the way, unoccupied beach on the big island! (When the author says nasty 4 wheel drive road, he means it!) We found some incredible places we would never have known about (which is why they are deserted!) and the driving directions were spot on- very easy to follow. I read the book cover to cover before we went– it was the very first guide book I ever really READ- full of very funny insights- others are so boring, and frequently out of date before they are published. I appreciated the updates post-publishing which were available on the webpage. The restaurants suggested had wonderful food, service was great when he said it would be, no problems. I also appreciated the advice on what places to avoid. The book was well organized, and easy to follow. Really enjoyed the adventures section - Would never have thought of a Night dive to see Manta Rays– that was really unforgettable!
Overall, I would not want to vacation in Hawaii without one of these books. Thanks for the GREAT Guide
My family has a house on the Kailua Coast, and I have been vacationing there 2 or 3 times per year for the past 30 years. I thought we’d seen it all until my boyfriend bought this book. We’ve found fantastic hikes and other recommendations that we hadn’t found in years of visits. If you are looking for a guide book for the Big Island, or even if you plan on staying at a hotel and don’t think you need a guide book, this is the one to buy, hands down.
Just returned from a great visit to the Big Island, made even greater by this book. Went from lava fields to rain forests in less than 2 hours and took some incredible back road tours that would have been impossible without this book. Found directions very clear, restaurant reviews impeccable and site reviews invaluable. On top of all that, authors have a very enjoyable way of writing, which my entire family enjoyed. Do get this book. I had also taken the Fodor and Frommer books, which I rarely opened.
If you’re considering a visit to the Big Island, get a copy of this book. They have a web site with updates to the book, and loads of great links to sites with info about the islands. We found this book invaluable as we planned our daily activities. One of the many reasons we hated to head home was that we wouldn’t get to continue to use this fabulous tome. It’s got to be the *best* guide I’ve ever seen. The maps are very detailed, accurate, and easy to follow; the inside tips and reviews are all superb. All written in an engaging prose. Highly recommended.
The first time we visited the Big Island we brought the book along but didn’t use it. Big Mistake! It’s filled with out of the way sights that are incredible to behold. When I did get around to reading it, I read it like a novel. We’ve used it four times since and have swum in little known volcanically heated pools and ’sauna-ed’ in natural caves. It’s easy to follow and full of wonderful descriptions. If you’re looking for hidden Hawaiian treasures– Get this book!
