I’ve spent a total of 6 weeks on Kauai and while I’ve checked out 4 different guidebooks on Kauaii I have used this book exclusively while on island. The authors do a great job of making it quick and easy for you to experience the best beaches, hikes, and other activities — just turn to the section you’re interested in (“Beaches” for example) and look for the big fat diamond symbol indicating a “gem” of an item (I wish all guidebooks did this as concisely and well as these folks do). The pictures are great and really help decision-making. Only rarely have I disagreed with their advice. Some readers have complained about restaraunt and helicopter tour recommendations — but that’s such a small part of what the island has to offer, and frankly I don’t recall be led astray by the book in these activities. If you’re mainly concerned about restaraunts and helicopters, simply stay at the Hyatt Regency and have their concierge set up a helicopter ride for you (the Hyatt can’t be beat for all-around luxury, good restaraunts, and quality service). But if you want to explore, and get the most from, the glorious natural beauty of this island, this is, as others have said, the only book you’ll need. I only wish they had one for Maui — but I’m stoked they have one for the Big Island and am ordering it today.

This updated version is really great. We took it along on our 4th trip to Kauai and, with the authors’ guidance, found some places off the beaten path. Our favorite excursion was Kipu Falls. The authors warn that you must cross private property and we’ve heard from locals that the property owner means it when he says “no trespassing”. We were glad we risked it. The falls were among the most spectacular and fun on the island. The kids swang from the rope swing into the lake at the base of the falls. Very awesome!! The evaluations of restaurants and attractions are right on the money. We learned not to go to places which were panned by the book. Don’t go to Kauai without this book!

I reviewed a few guidebooks prior to my first visit to Kauai. This one blew them all away. Within a day, my sister and I were able to guide ourselves (for free!) around the entire island without any hitches. The maps are great, directions precise and pictures true…. We did what we call beach tours based on the reviews and directions to well-known and not-so-well-known beaches. Beautiful. We ate at some of the places recommended and agreed with the reviews of all but one (didn’t like the mango glazed fish….) and another place had closed already. Perhaps we didn’t have the latest edition or the business just didn’t take. Nevertheless, if you are planning to go, get this book before you leave and make your plans. We discovered while at the least known places, especially the beaches, the only people there were the ones with this book in tow. Great for finding your own nirvana in this island paradise. I could go on for days, just get the book. You just can’t go wrong

This book is amazing. I highly recommend it to anyone going to Kauai. My wife and I used it (along with Fromers) on our recent vacation. I can not imagine making the trip without it. We were constantly consulting the book for what we wanted to go see or do (or not see or do) and the restaurant section was invaluable. We especially liked the beach pictures in the back and the descriptions. We unfortunately did not time to hit all of the many beaches of Kauai, but the book left us feeling good about the ones we did select. I don’t think this book let us down in any of its advice. Definitely a must have for any trip to the island and I assume the others written about the other islands are just as good. I hope to find out soon.

Want the real insight on Kauai so you don’t feel like just another Haole! Gives you the inside scoop on all the important stuff, like on which business’ are reputable and which ones are NOT!!–how else would u know this valuable knowledge?? They do all the homework for you, so you can make your own informed choices without having to waste your time and money!!!
